PRIME MINISTER MARAPE CALLS FOR STRONGER LAW AND ORDER TO SUPPORT MILNE BAY’S TOURISM FUTURE

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has called on the people of Milne Bay to strengthen law and order and reclaim the province’s reputation as one of Papua New Guinea’s safest destinations as it prepares to expand its tourism industry.

Speaking during the opening of the upgraded Gurney Airport, Prime Minister Marape said modern infrastructure alone would not guarantee economic growth unless communities also took ownership of peace and public safety.

“I ask all my people here to take ownership of law and order,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“We are happy with this airport. We are improving the roads. We are investing despite limited resources. Now I ask you to protect these investments.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged that Milne Bay had experienced law and order challenges in recent years but said encouraging progress had already been made.

“You have always been known as good citizens. That reputation slipped over the past seven or eight years, but I am pleased to see it returning.

“Let us hold onto that reputation and rebuild it together.”

Prime Minister Marape particularly appealed to the young people of Milne Bay to become ambassadors for peace and tourism.

“I may not be able to give every young person a job immediately, but together we can create opportunities.

“Be agents of peace. Protect your environment. Preserve your culture. Welcome visitors. Tourism will create opportunities for your communities.”

He said the National Government’s vision was to make Milne Bay Papua New Guinea’s leading tourism destination, supported by the upgraded Gurney Airport, improved roads and future international flights.

“Tourism depends on safety. Visitors must feel secure. Investors must have confidence. Communities must take pride in protecting what belongs to them.”

Prime Minister Marape said Milne Bay’s culture, natural beauty and hardworking people gave the province every opportunity to become a major driver of economic growth through tourism, fisheries, agriculture and other industries.

“As Papua New Guinea moves into its next 50 years, let Milne Bay lead by example through peace, unity and hard work. Together we can build a prosperous future for our province and our country.”
