Prime Minister Marape Calls for Compassion and Orderly Solutions on Urban Evictions

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has called on Land Title holders, Authorities, and affected Communities to exercise compassion, patience, and cooperation as Government works toward long-term and orderly solutions to Urban Eviction issues in Port Moresby and other urban centres.

Speaking at a Press Conference today at Melanesian Haus, Prime Minister Marape said Government had already instructed a temporary halt to certain Eviction exercises while proper consultations and relocation arrangements are pursued. “We want to ask those who hold Title and Court Orders to also have consideration for humanity,” Prime Minister Marape said. “Please consult Government first so we can work through proper and orderly solutions.”

The Prime Minister said the Government’s National Urbanisation Office and the Department of Lands were actively reviewing affected areas and engaging with Landowners and Communities to prevent unnecessary hardship and conflict. “We are working to properly take stock of Land under Court Orders and ensure proper relocation, resettlement, or alternative arrangements,” he explained. Prime Minister Marape thanked Investors and Title Holders in the Eight Mile and Wildlife areas who have cooperated with Government in seeking balanced outcomes. “I thank those who are working with Government toward permanent solutions that are win-win for everyone,” he stated.

The Prime Minister  revealed that Government had already allocated substantial Funding to support Urban Land Development programs aimed at easing long-standing Land and Housing pressures in Port Moresby. “That Program will create over 10,000 Allotments in Port Moresby alone,” Prime Minister Marape announced. “Our intention is to make Land available especially for employed Papua New Guineans and long-term Urban residents.”

Prime Minister Marape said Government’s broader Urbanisation agenda aims to create a more organised, inclusive, and sustainable Urban development framework for Papua New Guinea. “We do not want people endlessly queuing at Lands Department seeking Titles,” he said. “We want orderly Urban Growth that respects both lawful Land Ownership and the dignity of people who have lived in these communities for many years.”

The Prime Minister urged all Parties to avoid confrontation and allow Government agencies to mediate fair and peaceful outcomes. “Government is not blind to these challenges. We are taking measured and responsible steps to ensure proper solutions are found,” he said.
