Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls for their commanding victory and third consecutive Pacific Bowl triumph, following their 50–18 win over Fiji at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
“This is more than a sporting victory — it reflects our national character: bold, united, and world-class,” Prime Minister Marape said. “Our Kumuls delivered a performance of immense pride in front of our people.”
The Kumuls stunned Fiji with a blistering start, scoring the first five tries to surge to a 30–0 lead within the opening half of the match. Stand-out performances included second-rower Rhyse Martin, who converted all nine attempts (eight conversions and one penalty) and crossed for a try himself, finishing with 22 points.
Prime Minister Marape also praised the team’s depth of contributors:
“Eight different players crossed for tries — this shows the breadth of talent in our squad and why Papua New Guinea’s future in rugby league is so exciting.”
He acknowledged the visiting Fiji Bati for their competitive spirit and contribution to Pacific rugby league:
“In competition we sharpen ourselves; in friendship we strengthen the Pacific community. Congratulations to Fiji and thank you for the contest.”
Reflecting on the broader significance of the victory, Prime Minister Marape said:
“As we mark PNG@50, this win is symbolic of our nation’s journey — building strength from within, inspiring our youth, and projecting our presence on the world stage.”
He reaffirmed the Government’s continued support for rugby league, from grassroots development to elite performance:
“Our commitment is to ensure our players, coaches, and administrators have the resources and environment to succeed. This win is a milestone — and the next milestone is even greater.”
Prime Minister Marape extended special commendation to Head Coach Jason Demetriou and the entire Kumuls squad:
“Coach Demetriou has instilled a disciplined and fearless style of play that our nation can rally behind. Congratulations to him and the entire coaching staff on this achievement.”
He concluded:
“To the Kumuls, the fans, the families, the coaches, the officials — you have all played your part in this historic moment. Well done, and may this be the first of many to come.”
