PRIME MINISTER MARAPE LAUNCHES ‘WINGS OVER WILD’, A BIOGRAPHY HONOURING THE LEGACY OF SIR BOB BATES

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape today (29.03.26) officially launched Wings Over Wild, a new book that celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of Papua New Guinea’s pioneering aviator and eco-tourism icon, Sir Bob Bates.

The official launch took place at Sir Bob’s Rondon Ridge Lodge overlooking Mt Hagen city in Western Highlands Province, marking a significant moment of recognition for one of Papua New Guinea’s long-serving pioneers in aviation and tourism.

Prime Minister Marape said the launch of the book is a timely tribute, as the nation celebrates 50th Independence Anniversary, and reflects on the importance of documenting the stories of individuals who have played major roles in shaping Papua New Guinea.

“It is a great honour for me, as Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, to officially launch Wings Over Wild. This is a remarkable book authored by Barry Payne that captures the life and legacy of one of our nation’s true pioneers, Sir Bob Bates,” Prime Minister Marape said.

In his address, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Sir Bob’s lifelong service to Papua New Guinea, describing his contribution as one that has impacted the country far beyond aviation.

“Sir Bob Bates’ contribution to Papua New Guinea reaches far beyond aviation. His vision, integrity, and lifelong commitment has helped connect communities, build opportunity and share our country with the world,” Prime Minister Marape said.

PM Marape said Sir Bob has called Papua New Guinea home and has helped promote the country internationally through his aviation operations and his eco-tourism company, Trans Niugini Tours, which includes iconic lodges such  as Rondon Ridge Lodge in Western Highlands Province and Ambua Lodge in Tari, Hela Province.

He said Sir Bob is among the great pioneers, similar to the late Sir Peter Barter and others, who created jobs, opened opportunities and contributed meaningfully to national development.

The Prime Minister said Wings Over Wild tells a powerful story of courage, endurance, and innovation, highlighting Sir Bob’s pioneering work in aviation during the post-war era and his efforts to open up some of the most remote parts of the country.

“Flying light aircraft into isolated mountain valleys and establishing operations in some of the most challenging environments, Sir Bob was instrumental in laying the foundations for both aviation and tourism in our country,” he said.

“His work not only connected people but also created pathways for economic growth and cultural exchange.”

He added that Sir Bob’s story is one that should be preserved for future generations, and called on more Papua New Guineans to write and record the stories of the nation’s builders.

“It is about time books and historic records of such humble persons are written and preserved for the future generation,” he said.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged and thanked the author of the book, Mr Barry Payne, describing him as an accomplished aviator, a respected writer, and a close lifelong friend of Sir Bob Bates.

“I also wish to sincerely acknowledge Barry Payne, an accomplished aviator and author whose dedication to documenting this story ensures that this important chapter of our nation’s history is preserved for generations to come,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“With more than six decades of aviation experience, including his time in Papua New Guinea, Mr Payne brings both authenticity and deep respect to this work.”

Prime Minister Marape said the story of Sir Bob Bates reflects the role aviation has played in national development, particularly in a country where many communities remain isolated and accessible only by air.

Prime Minister Marape said the message behind the book is not only historical but inspirational, especially for young Papua New Guineans.

“Wings Over Wild is more than just a book. It is an educational resource, a source of inspiration, and a valuable addition to our national narrative,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“I encourage all Papua New Guineans, especially our young people, to read this book and learn from the resilience, vision, and determination it represents.”

Prime Minister Marape thanked both Sir Bob Bates and Barry Payne on behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea.

“As we reflect on our nation’s journey towards 50 years of Independence, this book stands as a fitting tribute to individuals who helped shape our path,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sir Bob Bates and Barry Payne for their outstanding contributions.”

Sir Bob said he was deeply honoured that Prime Minister Marape attended the launch.

“I’m honoured and humbled the fact that the Prime Minister would come and launch this book that my friend has written,” he said.PM
