Prime Minister Marape Issues Urgent Call for Disaster Reports as Government Mobilises Full Response to Tropical Cyclone Malai

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has issued an urgent directive to all Project Administrators and Government Agencies across Papua New Guinea to immediately Report on the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Malai, as the Government intensifies its National Disaster Response efforts.

This follows earlier Warnings and precautionary measures announced by the Prime Minister, with the Government now moving into full Response mode to ensure timely assistance reaches all affected communities.

Prime Minister Marape emphasised that rapid communication and coordination are critical in saving lives and delivering urgent relief.

“We want all Project Administrators to get in touch with the Chief Secretary’s Office and the National Disaster Office immediately to inform us of affected areas. Time is of the essence—we must act quickly to support our people,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister has called for immediate Situation Reports from all Districts, Provinces, and Project Sites, particularly identifying:

– Areas impacted by strong winds, flooding, or infrastructure damage

– Communities facing medical emergencies or displacement

– Locations suitable for the delivery and distribution of Relief supplies

“We ask all Administrators to respond at the very earliest so that we can attend to those facing medical conditions and disaster-related hardships,” Prime Minister Marape stressed.

Government Activates National Emergency Response

The Prime Minister confirmed that the Government has activated a Whole-of-Government Response, including:

– The Papua New Guinea Defence Force

– The National Disaster Centre

– Central Government Agencies and Provincial Administrations

These Agencies are now on standby and actively coordinating logistics to deliver food, medical supplies, and emergency assistance to affected populations.

“We have activated our Defence Force and Disaster Response mechanisms to assist anyone currently going through the distress of being a Cyclone victim,” he said.

Relief Operations to Be Fast-Tracked

Prime Minister Marape underscored that early Reporting will directly determine the speed and effectiveness of Relief operations, including air and sea deployment of supplies to remote and cut-off areas.

“Provide us with clear locations where help can be delivered. This will allow us to mobilise quickly and ensure no one is left behind,” he added.

Message to Affected Communities

The Prime Minister assured citizens in impacted Regions that the Government stands with them during this difficult time.

“To all our people affected by Cyclone Malai, we are with you. The Government is working around the clock to ensure help reaches you as quickly as possible. Stay safe, follow Official Advisories, and remain in contact with your local Authorities.”

Call for National Unity

Prime Minister Marape also called on Churches, Community Leaders, NGOs, and Private Sector partners to work alongside Government in a unified National Response.

“This is a time for unity and compassion. Let us work together as one nation to support our people in need.”

The Office of the Prime Minister will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and as Relief operations are deployed across affected Regions.
