Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has congratulated the Papua New Guinea Kumuls on their spirited 40–28 victory over the Cook Islands in the opening match of the 2025 Pacific Championships at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Prime Minister Marape commended the team for showcasing the true fighting spirit of Papua New Guinea, thrilling nearly 15,000 passionate fans who filled the stadium.
“Our Kumuls have once again made our nation proud,” Prime Minister Marape said. “Their determination, teamwork, and national pride on the field today reflect the heart and unity of our people as we celebrate 50 years of independence.”
He said the match was a testament to the growing strength and professionalism of Papua New Guinea rugby league, which continues to inspire the next generation of athletes across the country.
“Rugby league unites us as one people under one flag — whether we are in Port Moresby, Enga, Bougainville, or Manus — we all stand behind the Kumuls. This win is not just for the players, but for every Papua New Guinean who believes in the power of sport to bring us together,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Marape also commended the Cook Islands team for their fighting performance and the sportsmanship displayed by both sides, saying it reflects the Pacific spirit of friendship and respect. “Our brothers from the Cook Islands showed great courage and heart. This is what Pacific sports are about — friendly competition, mutual respect, and shared pride in who we are as Pacific people,” he said.
With the Kumuls now set to face Fiji next weekend in the battle for the Pacific Bowl, Prime Minister Marape urged the team to stay focused and continue representing Papua New Guinea with pride and discipline
“The whole nation will be behind you as you take on Fiji. Play with heart, play for each other, and play for your country. Win or lose, you have already made us proud.”
The Prime Minister also congratulated the Cook Islands Moana women’s team for their impressive 42–24 victory over Tonga earlier in the day, describing it as a strong sign of women’s rugby league growth across the Pacific.
“Our region’s women’s game continues to flourish, and we celebrate every Pacific sister who takes the field to represent her country with pride,” he said.
