Prime Minister Hon. James Marape says Papua New Guinea is preparing to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Government systems to improve efficiency, transparency, and fairness across public administration.
Speaking following his return from the World Economic Forum, Prime Minister Marape said meetings with global technology firms in Davos, Switzerland, highlighted how AI can reduce human bias and inefficiency in Government decision-making.
“We want non-emotional systems that select the best outcomes for the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister said AI could be applied to areas such as land administration, company registration, licensing processes in mining, forestry and fisheries, as well as public service recruitment and procurement.
“Our intention is to cut out nepotism, delays, and corruption by using technology that applies merit-based principles,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape confirmed that several technology solutions encountered in Davos will be assessed through an open tender process, alongside proposals already being explored with international partners.
“This is about building a modern State that works faster and fairer for our people,” he said.
He stressed that AI adoption would support national development goals.
“This is not about replacing people. It is about improving systems so public servants can focus on delivery,” he said.
The Prime Minister said global interest in digital infrastructure, data centres, and clean energy presents additional opportunities for PNG to integrate technology with renewable energy potential.
“Major global companies are showing interest in clean-energy-powered data centres. This is a new growth space for Papua New Guinea,” he said.
