PM MARAPE CALLS FOR VALUES-DRIVEN NATION BUILDING AS HE HONOURS SIR BOB BATES’ LIFETIME OF SERVICE

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has used the launch of the new Book “Wings Over Wild” in Mt Hagen today to call on Papua New Guineans to embrace a Values-Driven approach to Nation Building, inspired by the life and legacy of Tourism pioneer Sir Bob Bates.

Speaking at Rondon Ridge Lodge in Western Highlands Province, Prime Minister Marape said Sir Bob’s life represents more than business success—it reflects a philosophy of commitment, patience, and purposeful contribution to Papua New Guinea.

“Sir Bob chose Papua New Guinea. Many of us were born into this country, but he made a deliberate decision to come here, to stay here, and to contribute to building this nation,” Prime Minister Marape said.

A DIFFERENT MODEL OF ECONOMIC SUCCESS

The Prime Minister highlighted Sir Bob Bates as an example of a different kind of Investor—one who built Enterprises grounded in culture, environment, and long-term sustainability rather than short-term profit. “He was in business even before this country was fully exposed to business—and not business that is purely driven by profit. His work reflects values, patience, and respect for people and place,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape said Sir Bob’s Eco-Tourism model offers a blueprint for Papua New Guinea’s Economic future—particularly in rural areas where opportunities remain underutilised.

He pointed to Sir Bob’s developments across remote regions of the country as proof that economic activity can thrive outside urban centres when built on local engagement and natural assets. “Our land, our culture, and our environment are not obstacles—they are opportunities. Sir Bob showed us that our villages can become centres of economic activity,” the Prime Minister stated.

EMPOWERING PAPUA NEW GUINEANS TO BUILD FROM WITHIN

Prime Minister Marape used the occasion to challenge citizens—especially young people—to move away from dependency and quick-money mindsets, and instead embrace hard work and innovation within their own communities. “You don’t need to sit in Port Moresby or Lae waiting for opportunity. In your own land, you can create value, build business, and contribute to your people,” he said.

He emphasised that true development begins with discipline and personal responsibility. “You must first tame the wild within yourself before you can transform your society. That is the lesson Sir Bob’s life teaches us,” Prime Minister Marape added.

RECOGNISING THOSE WHO CHOSE PNG AS HOME

Prime Minister Marape also used the platform to recognise a unique group of individuals—those who were not born in Papua New Guinea but chose to make it their home and contribute to its growth.

“At this 50th Anniversary of our nation, I want to thank that special cluster of Papua New Guineans—those who came from elsewhere but chose to stay and help build our country,” he said.

He said individuals like Sir Bob Bates represent a powerful example of unity, partnership, and shared nationhood.

A LESSON FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

Prime Minister Marape described Sir Bob Bates as part of a generation that “tamed the wild” and laid the foundation for modern Papua New Guinea, urging today’s generation to take responsibility for the next phase of development.

“The earlier generation built the foundations. Now it is our responsibility to consolidate, protect, and grow what they have started,” he said.

He warned against a growing culture of impatience and unrealistic expectations, encouraging young Papua New Guineans to adopt a long-term vision.

“There is no shortcut to success. It requires patience, hard work, and commitment—values that Sir Bob has lived by all his life,” the Prime Minister said.

A NATIONAL TRIBUTE TO A LIVING LEGEND

Prime Minister Marape described Sir Bob Bates as a “living legend” whose life story will continue to guide and inspire generations through the book “Wings Over Wild.”

“You have not let this country down one bit. On behalf of all Papua New Guineans, I say thank you for your lifetime of contribution,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the Book serves not only as a tribute but as a practical guide for nation building, entrepreneurship, and leadership rooted in integrity.

A MOMENT OF NATIONAL REFLECTION

The Prime Minister concluded by saying the Launch of the Book comes at a critical time as Papua New Guinea moves beyond its 50th Independence Anniversary, providing an opportunity for reflection on the values that have shaped the nation.

“This is more than a celebration of one man’s life—it is a reminder of what is possible when dedication, humility, and purpose are applied in service to country,” Prime Minister Marape said.

Prime Minister Marape was joined at the occasion by Western Highlands Governor Hon. Wai Rapa, former Prime Minister and Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti, MRDC Managing Director Augustine Mano and other distinguished Guests.
