Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has appealed to communities surrounding the University of Goroka (UOG) to look after the tertiary institution.
Prime Minister Marape made this appeal on Tuesday (11/11/25) following a fight between the students and the members of the surrounding communities, which had occurred over the weekend.
“Mitigation measures have been implemented; however, student learning has already been affected. The University senate has resolved that exam for first- year, second-year, and third year students will be made available online while arrangements are being made for final year students to be safely accommodated on campus.
“The government will be investing more in the campus to improve infrastructure so that students can remain on campus and be protected as they focus on their studies,” the Prime Minister said.
He emphasized that UOG is the institution that trained students who will serve as teachers throughout Papua New Guinea.
“These future high school teachers need to be protected now so they can serve the nation later and that their behaviour, discipline, and the way they interact with the community must be protected and supported.
“The university contributes significantly to the local economy of Goroka town ship, and the surrounding communities have been strong supporters of the university,” the Prime Minister added.
Prime Minister Marape stressed that alcohol consumption must not be tolerated in and around the university campus because it is not part of the school system and, therefore, should not be allowed in any social activities of the institution.
“We will work through policy mechanisms to ensure this is enforced,” he said.
Further, he stressed that the responsibility lies with all the parents, students, university staff, and the surrounding communities. He stressed that everyone must play their part.
He once again appealed to the communities to respect the university environment and maintain peace to restore order so that students can remain on campus, study without fear and complete their studies, and return home safely.
