PM MARAPE ADDRESSES THE 80TH GENERAL SESSION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH PACIFIC AIRLINES

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has officially opened the 80th General Session of  the Association of South Pacific Airlines (ASPA) this morning in Port Moresby, while welcoming delegates, airline executives and representatives from across the Pacific.

Prime Minister Marape extended the warm welcome to all visitors and participants, acknowledging the important role the aviation sector plays in connecting people and communities across the region.

“Thank you very much, and good morning to each and every one of you. Wel- come to Papua New Guinea for those who have joined us from overseas. You are all very much welcome,” he said.

Reflecting on his own recent travel experience, the Prime Minister spoke of how essential air travel is for Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.

“If it was not for pilots and airlines, I would not be here this morning.

“Forty-eight hours ago, I was in a city called Belem. In a country like ours, and indeed across the Pacific, aviation is not just a service – it is a lifeline that connects our people, our businesses, and our governments,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape commended ASPA for its contribution to strengthening aviation cooperation and development among Pacific nations over the past  eight decades.

He emphasized that regional unity and shared progress are key to building a stronger, connected Pacific.

“We must continue to work together to ensure that our airlines, our airports, and our aviation systems remain strong,” he said.

“Our goal must be to make air travel more efficient, more reliable, and accessible for our people — because connectivity drives development.”

He  reaffirmed  his  government’s  commitment  to  upgrading  Papua  New Guinea’s aviation infrastructure and supporting Air Niugini’s modernization program, including the introduction of new aircraft and the redevelopment of key airports.

“My government is investing in aviation because we understand its importance to our economy and our people,” he said.

“A connected Pacific is a stronger Pacific, and we will continue to play our part.”

The Prime Minister concluded by congratulating ASPA on its 80th General Session and encouraged continued collaboration among all Pacific airlines and aviation authorities to meet the region’s growing needs.

“Let us use this gathering to strengthen our partnerships. Together, we can ensure that the Pacific remains connected, competitive, and future-ready,” he said.
