Prime Minister Hon. James Marape held a productive meeting today with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Mr. Akihiko Tanaka, reaffirming Papua New Guinea’s strong and enduring partnership with Japan through JICA’s development assistance, which has exceeded K6 billion over the past 50 years.
During their meeting on Tuesday, 22nd July 2025, Prime Minister Marape expressed deep appreciation for JICA’s sustained support to Papua New Guinea since 1974. He praised the agency’s impactful presence in the country, highlighting its contributions to infrastructure, education, health and capacity-building.
“The government and people of Papua New Guinea are truly grateful for the continued partnership with JICA. We remain committed to supporting its development initiatives and strengthening our bilateral relations,” said Prime Minister Marape.
Key areas discussed included:
1. Visa arrangements between PNG and Japan;
2. The resumption of direct flights between Port Moresby and Tokyo;
3. Enhanced trade and investment opportunities; and
4. Broader future cooperation.
“Fifty-one years later, JICA’s assistance has reached over K6 billion. It is more than just a development agency — it is a monumental institution that has earned a lasting place in our nation’s heart,” Mr. Marape said.
He commended the people of Japan for their integrity and work ethic, qualities that are reflected in JICA’s steady and reliable engagement in PNG. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of expanding the relationship beyond aid, into areas of trade and economic partnership.
“We are eager to welcome more Japanese investors and work closely with both the government and people of Japan in creating mutual prosperity,” he added.
In response, JICA President Mr. Akihiko Tanaka thanked Prime Minister Marape for his kind words and expressed enthusiasm about the evolving partnership.
“Thank you for sharing your vision for the next 50 years. I believe the past five decades have been a foundation for what lies ahead — a period of joint collaboration,” said Mr. Tanaka.
He emphasized JICA’s commitment to the concept of co-creation, moving beyond traditional cooperation to create innovative and sustainable development pathways together.
“As we look to the future, our focus will be on joint investments and the shared use of each nation’s strengths and resources. This partnership is entering an exciting new phase,” President Tanaka said.
