Prime Minister James Marape Congratulates Vanuatu and PNG on Melanesian Cup Triumph, Calls for Stronger Melanesian Solidarity Through Football

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has extended his warmest congratulations to Vanuatu for winning the Men’s division of the annual Melanesian Cup, and to the Papua New Guinea women’s national team for proudly securing the Women’s title in Port Moresby.

“The Melanesian Cup is a living expression of who we are as Melanesian peoples,” Prime Minister Marape said. “Our shared ancestors voyaged across oceans, carved communities into the land, and built vibrant cultures rooted in strength, respect, and kinship. On the football pitch, these same values come alive. Our young men and women competed as warriors of pride, unity, and honour, carrying the spirit of Melanesia on their shoulders.”

He praised the outstanding efforts of all participating teams, including the runners-up, noting that every player and coach contributed to deepening the ties that unify Melanesian nations.

“Every nation that stepped onto the field brought hope, talent, and courage. You reminded us that Melanesian excellence does not belong to one country—it belongs to all of us. From Fiji to Solomon Islands, from Vanuatu to PNG, we are one family. In football, we stand shoulder to shoulder: fierce in competition, warm in friendship.”

Prime Minister Marape also expressed gratitude to visiting delegations, team staff, match officials, and supporters from across the region.

“We hope you have felt the warmth and hospitality of the people of Papua New Guinea. Our doors, hearts, and hands are always open to our Melanesian brothers and sisters. We look forward to next year’s event in Fiji—another opportunity to celebrate our shared identity, deepen regional solidarity, and elevate Melanesian football to global heights.”

He emphasised that this tournament forms a meaningful part of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, symbolising the strength, unity, and optimism that have carried the nation forward for five decades.

“As PNG celebrates 50 years as an independent state, the Melanesian Cup reminds us that we do not walk alone. We stand with our Pacific family—a region rich in heritage, resilience, and youth potential. May this Cup continue as a beacon of unity, sportsmanship, and hope for generations to come.”
