Prime Minister Marape commends Digicel PNG for its outstanding Investment, Innovation, and Community Impact

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has commended Digicel PNG for its tremendous contribution to the development of Papua New Guinea through substantial Investments in telecommunications infrastructure, employment, taxation, and community development.

PM Marape said Digicel PNG, under the ownership of Telstra, continues to demonstrate strong confidence in Papua New Guinea’s economy by investing over US$1.2 billion (approximately K4 billion) in the country since its establishment. He said this level of commitment clearly signifies the company’s long-term faith in the nation’s growth, progress, and digital transformation agenda.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea, I acknowledge Digicel PNG for being a Strategic Partner in advancing our country’s connectivity, education, and community development,” Prime Minister Marape stated.

“Their Investments are not only driving the Digital Economy but also improving the Quality of Life for our people across urban and rural communities.”

Driving Connectivity and Innovation

The Prime Minister praised Digicel PNG’s extensive Telecommunications coverage, which now reaches over 83% of the Population and 45% of the Geographical Area with 4G services. He noted that the Company’s plans to roll out 115 new rural coverage sites and upgrade 128 existing sites to 5G will further enhance connectivity across remote areas, ensuring no Papua New Guinean is left behind in the digital era.

“In our Government’s vision to connect every Papua New Guinean, Digicel’s role is vital,” PM Marape said. “Access to reliable and affordable communication is the foundation of economic empowerment, education, and inclusive development.”

Economic Contributions and Employment

The Prime Minister also highlighted Digicel PNG’s significant contribution to National Revenue and Employment Creation. The Company pays over K400 million in Taxes annually, including Corporate, Employment, GST, and Withholding Taxes — a clear testament to its economic importance. Over the past decade, Digicel PNG has paid a cumulative total of US$750 million (K2.2 billion) in Taxes.

In addition, the Company directly employs 1,100 Staff and supports over 40,000 Indirect Jobs, ranging from network maintenance contractors to small business partners in distribution.

PM Marape also acknowledged Digicel’s leadership in Climate Action and its commitment to Environmental Sustainability through investments in Solar Energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Community Development through the Digicel Foundation

Prime Minister Marape paid special tribute to the Digicel Foundation, describing it as one of the country’s most impactful Corporate philanthropic initiatives. Since its establishment in 2008, the Foundation has invested K170 million and directly impacted over 900,000 lives through 466 completed Projects across the country.

These include:

– 181 Primary School double classrooms

– 134 Elementary School double classrooms

– 32 Libraries and 53 Community Learning Centres

– 36 Mobile Health Clinics and 10 Rural Health Aid Posts

– Women’s Resource Centres, Physiotherapy services, and Eye Care programs

“The Digicel Foundation’s work in Education, Health, and Community Empowerment aligns perfectly with our National Development Goals,” the Prime Minister said.

“Their contributions demonstrate true Corporate Citizenship — empowering rural communities and transforming lives where it matters most.”

A Strategic Partner for PNG’s Future

PM Marape reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to supporting genuine investors like Digicel PNG who share the vision of a modern, connected, and inclusive Papua New Guinea.

“Digicel PNG is more than just a Telecommunications provider; it is a national partner in progress,” he said.

“I encourage other companies to follow this example by investing in sustainable, people-centered development that uplifts the lives of all Papua New Guineans.”

The Prime Minister concluded by thanking Digicel PNG and its Management for their continued Partnership with the Government in driving digital transformation, enhancing rural connectivity, and contributing to national revenue and employment.

“Together, we are building a stronger, smarter, and more connected Papua New Guinea,” Prime Minister Marape said.
