PNG stands ready to partner for a sustainable and peaceful Pacific.

Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister Hon James Marape, Minister for Fisheries Hon. Jelta Wong called for partnerships in the region for a sustainable and peaceful Blue Pacific.

The Minister for Fisheries further announced that Papua New Guinea stands ready and is committed to working with our forum family to build a resilient and sustainable Blue Pacific.

Minister Wong made this announcing in his intervention on Item 3: Regional and Strategic Landscape, of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Plenary today in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

He said, Iume Tugeda: Act Now for an Integrated Blue Pacific is more than just a phrase. It is a call to action rooted in the very fabric of our shared identity.

He further added that it speaks to the Tok Pisin spirit of unity and collaboration that has defined our people for generations.

“In the face of unprecedented challenges, our strength lies not in isolation but in our collective resolve to act as one,” Minister Wong said.

“The Blue Pacific is not just a geographical space. It is our home, it is our identity, and it is our future. To protect it, we must stand together, united in purpose.

“The threat we face from the existential crisis of climate change which threatens to submerge our low lying Islands to economic pressures that impact our development. The prevalence of illicit drugs moving through our ports and being used by our people around the Pacific Region are not unique to any one nation.

“The rising sea levels and intensifying storms is our shared reality. The challenges of food security and maritime resources management demands a coordinated approach.”

Minister for Fisheries said this are the issues that can only be absolved with genuine partnerships and shared responsibilities.

Minister Wong reiterated that the time for deliberation has passed, now is the time to act, and Papua New Guinea stands ready to be a partner in this collective action.

He further added that as our nation turns 50 in the next few days, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to the prosperity and security of our region.

“This includes our maritime surveillance, promoting sustainable fisheries and collaborating on initiatives that would create a  more stable economic future for all our people.

“We must continue to advocate on development space for our most vulnerable members, amplifying their voices so that the world understands the urgency of our situation. Let us seige this moment to reaffirm our commitment to one and other.

Minister Wong called on all PIF Leaders to work in partnership to transform the spirit of Iume Tugeda into tangible, integrated actions that will secure a prosperous and peaceful future for our children and the generations to come.

He said he knows the work ahead is great, but our collective will is even greater.
